If you’re anything like me, thinking yourself to be a little handy with a needle, thread, some fabric scraps and a lot of imagination, you get a kick out of D.I.Y costume making for kids’ parties and Halloween costumes. I love creating – or attempting to create – costumes for my children, and I think my creations are pretty much successful at hitting the mark.
But what do you do when your child comes home wanting a Darth Vader costume? I faced that dilemma recently with my nine-year-old son. For his Halloween costume it was to be this Star Wars villain or nothing else.
“Batman? A Pirate?” I cautiously suggested a few hints of alternatives…
“No, Mum. Darth Vader. I wore a Batman costume last year and you’re always trying to get me to be a pirate…” (hmm… could some subliminal message about Johnny Depp be trying to escape there?) “…this year I want to be Darth Vader.”
Now, the Dark Lord of Sith transcends my abilities with aluminium foil and black-fabric capes. Rather than summoning together all the power of the Force, I just consulted the internet for the best place to buy costume supplies.
It was so easy – I just ordered online, and the costume arrived soon after. My son was beside himself, and I felt pretty proud of my purchase as it achieved the ultimate stamp of approval – being worn to bed every evening for the following week. If it’s too difficult for me to make, I think it’s a fantastic option to purchase costumes. My three-year-old daughter still wears an over-sized hand-me-down Snow White dress on a daily basis, so I knew that rental is just not an option with my kids! |
